ELECTROMAGNETIC CLUTCH AND BRAKES

SUCO electromagnetic clutches and brakes

THE HISTORY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC CLUTCHES AND BRAKES BEGAN WITH THE ELECTRIFICATION OF HEAVY INDUSTRY; IN AN ERA DOMINATED BY HUGE CENTRALIZED MOTORS, THESE DEVICES ACTED AS ``LOGIC SWITCHES`` OF MECHANICS

With the boom in automation, their use has transformed, making them tools to manage rapid start-stop cycles in sectors such as packaging and textiles, where speed of reaction is still essential.

Today, thanks to power electronics, the VFD allows the management of speed, acceleration ramps of the engine and electric braking; Electromagnetic clutches and brakes are therefore less used than in the past, but continue to be used.

There are several standardised and “shelf-mounted” couplings on the market, which normally meet the simplest needs and are essentially oriented towards price containment

WHY CHOOSE THEM? THE TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES

The answer lies in the performance and quality of the motion:

  • zero drag – in the positive brake, in the absence of power, a return spring completely detaches the friction surfaces; this is essential for high-speed applications or where overheating and passive wear during free rotation are to be avoided
  • compactness and responsiveness – Usually, with the same torque, a positive brake can be more compact and have very fast engagement/disengagement times

A SINGLE CONSTRUCTION PHILOSOPHY, THREE WAYS TO SET IT IN MOTION

SUCO has developed three macro-families of electromagnetic couplings, designed to meet the specific needs of each application with torques between 1 and 280 Nm and speeds up to 10000 rpm
